INTRODUCING THE JAZZORCHESTER VORARLBERG (SWR 2010)
There’s a lot of talk about music being a universal language but the repetition of that pretty phrase sometimes obscures the concrete truth of it: music is a language much like any other. The art of speaking it is in the individuality: if you describe the sun to me, it will be different than when I describe it to you. And the beauty of music is that if you find a new way of saying something, the “something” you are saying also becomes new.
The Vorarlberger dialect can be by turns friendly, impenetrable, or both at the same time; the people are hardworking, straightforward and a touch idiosyncratic – and you can hear it in the music: there’s not much talk about what it all means, will people like it, can we sell it. Instead there’s an original approach, a dedication to handwork and a genuine and uncomplicated love for music and for playing together. CARPE NOCTEM – VOM DUNKEL INS LICHT with Vocale Neuburg (Comp.: Johannes Berauer)
Ein Werk für Chor und Jazzorchester in sakralem Raum zu komponieren ist mehr als unkonventionell. Sowohl die Verbindung dieser beiden Klangkörper als auch der Aufführungsort, die Kirche, versprechen neue Klangwelten, die so wohl noch nicht gehört wurden. Der Komponist Johannes Berauer versucht in diesem Projekt das Zyklische der Natur zu verarbeiten. Im ewigen Kreislauf von Geburt und Tod erschafft sich die Natur ständig neu. Jeder Gedanke, jede Idee, jede Entwicklung, die der Mensch durchläuft beginnt mit diesem Keimen.
Bewusst wurde der Jänner als Aufführungsmonat gewählt, da dann die Zeit des Neubeginns im jährlichen Kreislauf ist: die Natur schläft, regeneriert sich und bereitet sich auf den nächsten Zyklus vor. Nicht zufällig feiern wir Neujahr mit allen guten Vorsätzen im Jänner. Auch Weihnachten, die Zeit Christi Geburt – des Heilbringers in dunkler Stunde – fällt in diese Zeit. In vielen Kulturen wird die Wintersonnenwende gefeiert, der Zeitpunkt, von dem an die Tage wieder länger werden: „Vom Dunkel ins Licht.”
